The state of California in 1850 had plenty of money - California was awash in the revenues of the Gold Rush.

By 1850, the Spanish-speaking Californios were vastly outnumbered by English speaking Forty-Niners. That's why California went directly to statehood.

And I know what Victor David Hanson says about "Mexifornia", but I don't think even now a &lt;i&gt;majority&lt;/i&gt; of Californians speak Spanish.

However, the last sentence is spot on.</description>
