...One thing I've noticed isn't so much that movies are bad as they are LONG. PJ's King Kong had the potential - IMHO - to eclipse the original, but it went about 30 minutes too long. The Departed is a stunner, but I shudder to think how long the director's cut is going to be.

At this point, the cost of going to the theater as a couple is roughly equivalent to BUYING the DVD. So if the movie is decent, I’m more apt to buy it anyway. And I can tell if it’s decent by what people are saying about it (and, more critically, who says what.)

The last movie I saw in the theater was Serenity, because I’m a fan and I wanted to support it. Otherwise, no, I’m not interested in a sub-par moviegoing experience, and I know it’s subpar because I’ve gone to theaters in other cities.

Maus would make a horrible movie. Utterly awful. I might consider a Watchmen movie, but I can take the violence. Sandman keeps getting bogged down in pre-production, which might be a good thing, given that the primary location is dream. But in general they’ve glommed onto the comic books because they think they’ll make money.

It’s really not that hard to see what is wrong. Watch a movie made by somebody who really loves his work and you’ll see the difference. LOTR is a good example; yes, it had its flaws and missteps like any adaptation but you could tell that Peter Jackson really loved doing it, the actors loved doing it, and Weta really, REALLY loved doing it. That kind of joy shines through.

Hollywood, make movies because you love making movies— not making money— and your audience will return.
