In the Middle of Moving On
Posted By: Timmer @ 1610 on 2006-03-30

We’ll be rolling out of here in April, heading West for one more go on the PCS-go-round before we finally retire back to Boise. (PCS: Permanent Change of Station for the civilian readers.) Doing the out-processing while moving while figuring out what to do with cats. You know..all that fun.

Inputs from me will be light if at all existant for the next couple weeks.

I’m not particularly sure if I’m coming back at all to be honest with you.

I’m having trouble being associated with someone who would burn the flag in order to express their displeasure over a law. It goes against what I believe on a gut level. I guess I understand it intellectually, but this isn’t about that. If I have to explain it, you probably wouldn’t get it. There are better ways to express your displeasure. Less insulting. More effective. To some it’s just a piece of cloth, to me and mine it’s so much more than that. I can’t get any more succinct than that.

  1. I’m sorry my meaning was lost on you, Timmer. But please understand that we are not simply talking about a law. Those have already been struck down by Texas v. Johnson (1989) and US v. Eichman (1990). We are talking about a Constitutional amendment.

I wonder if you would be so complacent, were Congress to pass an amendment stating “the Roman Catholic Church shall be the official church of the United States, and all residents shall attend services and worship as directed by their respective Cardinals,” or “the President shall be sovereign ruler for life, and name his or her own successor?”

In any event, I wish you a safe and trouble-free move.

  2. And you miss my point Connors.

I find you loathesome. I despise you. I think you’re lower than things I’ve scraped off my shoe.

This was simply the final straw.

    I’m done tolerating you.

  4. Beatings? Woohoo!! Yeah baby!

    What?

Okay…so it was over the top.

    Shrug.

Some people seem to be born to piss me off.

  5. Some years ago, I had an interesting conversation with a fellow outside a bar. I’d recently seen him on television, as one of three people arrested for flag burning under a new ordnance. I recognized him because of the mohawk….

His point, if I recall it correctly, was that you can’t legislate patriotism, though he put it a bit more colorfully. I didn’t get the impression that he was one of the America haters - he didn’t just get up one day thinking “I want to burn the American flag”.

My point… eludes me for the moment. I’m sure there’s some point to this parable, but damned if I know what it is. Perhaps it’s that one thing the flag stands for is our committment to allowing dissent. Maybe it’s that the flag stands for the right to burn it in protest. Then again, maybe getting political wisdom from a flag-burning skinhead might be a bad idea.
