Two days late, but, what the hell…here’s my take based on what I’ve read and seen in the last 48 hours.
The folks on the far right love her…which gives me pause. I’m not a far right guy. Someone who goes by the tag, “Social Conservative” makes me think of Gladys Kravitz, peeking out from behind her curtains, making decisions about how my life ought to be.
The folks on the far left hate her…this makes me smile.
She’s originally from Idaho, moved to Alaska, went to college in Idaho, and then went BACK to Alaska. I understand that. Idaho’s not as “civilized” as much of the U.S., but it’s not Alaska. Anyone who chooses to live up there, has my respect.
She’s a babe, in a “naughty librarian” kind of way. Yes, that’s simply testosterone talking, but hey, at my age, when it talks, I listen.
I’m not thrilled that she’s been accused of trying to get her ex brother in law fired and then fired the guy who wouldn’t fire the brother in law. There’s an, “Off with their heads!” feel to that. Is the McCain camp THAT sure that she didn’t do anything wrong?
The experience thing. We’ve had experienced people in office before and I haven’t been impressed. I don’t think the Presidency or Vice Presidency should be held “professional” politicians. Quite honestly, I’m against professional politicians out of sheer orneriness (sic).
I’ve heard that her huband and son aren’t Republicans, they’re independents. I think that’s simply amazing and it’s definitely a plus.
A couple women I work with are poli-sci majors and they think McCain has given the race away. “No WAY a woman should be the VP with a President who’s THAT old. Americans won’t have it!” Hmmm, makes me want to vote for MCain just to prove them wrong.
I’m not voting for either candidate based on their Veep pick, but I’m with Mom…pass the popcorn, this has finally become interesting.

I think the Far Right is reading far too much into this. I’m an Alaskan and may be wrong.
What is amazing for Alaska is that she has been governor for 2 years and still has an 80% approval rating. We are great about wanting to impeach every governor.
She does have ordinary people appeal.
A number of state career politicians in Alaska are out of a job because they under estimated her people and political skills.

Your poli-sci majors might want to get out more - my wife was leaning to Obama. Now she’s fully on the GOP side.
“Obama promised change and picked for a VP a guy who has been in the senate longer than McCain. McCain went out and practiced what Obama has preached.”
Mrs. Palin is someone the average voter can identify with. It makes a difference.

Interesting (if somewhat slanted for effect) comparison here.

Some of the praise for her (which has also shown up on Fox, amongst other outlets) is so pitiful it almost defies belief (were it not Fox). Foreign policy experience - Governor of somewhere that borders Canada and Russia. Fantastic. You have to be thankful that these people don’t report on elections in Switzerland.
On the facts, she’s a disaster area, and maybe even on background checks today. As an election candidate, however, I think she’s a work of genius. She’ll pick up 100,000 votes just for being foxy and pictured with an M16.
Going to need a sodding big box of popcorn though if today’s revelations are any sign of things to come.

I’ve only seen a clip of that show but it feels - to me - as if the fellow was trying to make a joke.
On the facts, she’s a disaster area,
Such as?

Actually, having lived and served in the AF in Alaska, those points aren’t as silly as they seem at first.
As Governor of Alaska, she has to deal with Russia, almost daily due to commercial fishing etc.. She has probably spoken directly with the Russians, and the Chinese, Japanese and Koreans, more in the past two years than the past three Secretaries of State.
The Alaskan Governor is also briefed, almost up to the minute, when the Russians fly bombers anywhere near Alaskan airspace and when their ground forces are exercising in Eastern Russia. The Alaskan National Guard (She would be Commander in Chief of the Guard) trains for the day that Russia decides they want Alaska back and they also have the only full-time guard missile defense force in the U.S. AND one of the larget reconnaissance squadrons in the nation.
As for the “revelation” that her daughter is pregnant, most Americans don’t care. My wife’s 100 year old Gramma used to say, “The first one comes at any time, the rest take nine months.”
The accusation that the Governor’s youngest is actually her daughter’s doesn’t hold water. If her daughter is 5 months pregnant and the newborn is 4 months old…simply not possible.
And even if it WERE true, so what? We adopted our grandson. That kind of thing happens all the time.
I give Senator Obama huge props for saying that family is off-limits. Too bad his supporters aren’t half as classy. If the left keeps trying to attack her on these family matters, it’s going to backfire. Americans will forgive a lot, understanding that family stuff happens. What the left fails to understand is that you simply don’t mess with someone’s kids.

She is not a LAWYER. That gets my vote.

I wonder if it’s not so much a matter of class* so much as misunderstanding people.
Governor Palin is a smart woman, educated at a university. Yet she chooses to live in a small town and raise enough kids to staff a basketball team. The Down’s kid thing. The hunting deal. Some people just don’t get that.
*or half class - is their class half empty or full?

Caribu Barbie
1. It’s spelled ‘c-a-r-i-b-o-u’.
2. Because higher taxes and more government are the sure cure for .. high taxes and too much government.

Damn, we got a poor grade of troll around here lately - just a simple drive-by spam comment, a couple of denigrating names and a misspelling.
All the good trolls must be at Ann Althouses’ or Michelle Malkins’ place.
