  1. Extremetech thought it was decent. I think Ars did, too.

There’s a lot of anti-MS FUD out there though, anytime they do anything.

  2. You don’t find the term “anti-MS FUD” the least bit ironic do you?

  3. A bit of failure in the eyes of the public might be what it takes to help grease the wheels of Vista’s pending arrival.

Folks have been waiting for a big Microsoft flop and now Vista is coming out. Better to slip a failure out first so reviews of Vista can mention it favorably in comparison. ‘Perhaps it’s a good thing Vista was delayed so they didn’t drop a stinker like Zune on us’, type of thing.

The release timing also does a similar job with the Playstation 3/Wii releases without creating any negative press regarding the Xbox 360.

And then Microsoft will fix and tweek and by version 3 (or is it 4) the Zune might be something worthwhile.

  4. No, but neither should you (unless you’re confusing MS with IBM, who originated the term).

Heck, I own an iPod and I am happy MS put out the Zune. The iPod is okay, but iTunes kind of sucks (128kbps? Are you kidding?). Any competition is a good thing. all of the people whining, pissing, moaning and crying about MS on one hand, say little or nothing about the portable music player market where Apple has an 85% market share and there haven’t been any significant upgrades since the first one came out. color screen, then video, which only came into place because the parts were cheaper, not because they couldn’t do it originally. There’s no innovation, but no one cares. (Shall we talk about the draconian DRM?).

I do not understand loyalty to companies or to products. Rev. 1 of the Zune sucks. Okay. Rev. 1 of the MacBook Pro sucked too. Companies make mistakes (just look at Sony since TVs started going flat-panel. They were caught off guard and had to partner w/ Samsung just to get a product on the shelves).

  5. FUD: IBM may have coined it, but I’ve heard it come out of MS in terms of LINUX far more often and recently than I ever heard it come out of IBM. I used to buy IT and software for a command, and DAMN, the MS Reps could shovel fast if you mentioned anything LINUX based. I just mentioned a LINUX based server and apps suite that we were considering to an MS Rep and they had a full freaking team in the General’s office so fast I would have swore they were on standby. That briefing was the definition of FUD.

I’ve never had any problems with iTunes. I can put my downloaded songs on up to 5 computers and on any number of iPods that I want to.

As for Draconian DRM…have you read the reviews of the MS store? Their stuff doesn’t even play on their own software!

NO significant upgrades? I suppose the shrinking size of the shuffle, the Nano, the colaboration with Nike, and the introduction of video and television downloads could be called insignificant. In your world.

I was kind of hoping the Zune would be a much better product in the hopes that the price of a new iPod would go down.
