And naturally, as soon as it occurs to me to do a search on "Stephens Party" I come up with the fact that the southbound group did indeed reach Lake Tahoe, making that above paragraph look extremely dumb.

Since Sgt. Mom is telling the story so extremely well, I won't point you there, but I will point out that there's apparently a group that does presentations for California schoolchildren based on the Stephens Party (as in, they take roles from the group.) Very cool.

The American River is named from “Rio de Los Americanos”— the river the Americans came down. Riverbeds do make for good passes sometimes.

(The American River goes along US 50, not I-80 (formerly US 40) which is the vastly simplified route we’re following in this story.)

Back on track— the Truckee is the only river to enter Lake Tahoe. The majority of the water in the lake comes through creeks and swamp filtration, and the clarity of the water dropped sharply after landfills took out much of the swamp. There are wetlands restoration projects going to help restore Tahoe’s famous purity.

And looking at a map (which is hard to find online), it looks like the pioneers would have left the Truckee long before it reached the lake, leaving that discovery to a later party.

At about 5300 feet, Walker Pass was hardly "going around the mountians entirely." Just thinking: from the Humboldt to the Owens, to the Kern - Walker seemed to have an affinity for rivers that went nowhere. :)
