Remember the old joke about the definition of the phrase “split second” being the time between the light turning green and the guy in back of you beeping his horn?
Well, the new definition is me, reading this in a e-mail

“I am the chairman of the contract award committee of the petroluem and
natural resources ministry here in Nigeria…”

And hitting the “delete” key.

(Actually, just seeing the word “Nigeria” triggers the delete reflex for most people.)

  1. You mean I’m not the only one getting this garbage?

  2. We just had two dummys in Perry Ga get taken by these people. The word still hasn’t gotten around apparently.

  5. Just curious… how much spam do ya’ll get?

The reason I ask is because I’ve spent the past year developing a top notch spam filter and I’m looking for bloggers who would like to use it for free. Assuming any bloggers who try this like the service and want to continue using it… all I ask in return is that they do one post on it and place a tiny & obscure (below the fold) link to my (upcoming) site at the bottom of their blog. Again, in return, their filtering will be done for free.

My filter currently blocks about 99% of the spam (and improving!!) with less than 1/50,000 legit e-mails blocked (which is well above industry standards). Also, when I launch this service in a month or so, the users will be able to review their blocked mail in a way that rank orders it from most sure that it is spam to least certain. This puts the pill spams from China at one end of the list and Office Depot junk mail at the other end… (along with any possible legit blocked mail which, again, practically never happens anyway). That way, you don’t find yourself “back to the drawing board” having to meticulously check ALL the messages in your blocked folder.

Also, check out my recent blog post about a related spam issue. You might find this interesting!

Let me know if anyone here is interested in trying my filter.

(I don’t have to worry about leaving my e-mail address in plain view… my filter blocks all the spam anyway!!)

  7. Then there are those of us with some time on our hands — and really warped senses of humor.

Yes, I have responded. Check out The Vulcan Ambassador Chuck E-mails. Some people think my responses were funny.
