Oh…My…God
Posted By: Timmer @ 1505 on 2004-11-30

I’m sitting here at work listening to Dark Side of the Moon, the intro to “Money” to be more specific, and one of the contractors looks at me, stops to listen, looks at me again and asks, “What the HELL is that?”

He’s not that much older than me…is this even possible?

Just asking…

  1. There was a small group back in the mid-’70s which rejected the prog rock movement. I recall this little clique of about three guys back in basic who replied, when I said my favorite band was Pink Floyd, “Oh, there’s no art in that synthesizer stuff.” Ooooook.

  2. That is possible only if the guy is deaf and was raised by monastic polar bears.

  3. Holy cow! Even I know Pink Floyd when I hear it and I avoid listening to it whenever I can.

  5. I don’t really see anything suprising about not recognizing Pink Floyd! I can’t say that I would recognize the band if I heard it on the radio. He started about the time I got out of the service. What I listened to then was mostly classical and the stuff from the 40s and 50s. Give the guy a break!

  6. The first time I ever heard a CD was at stereo store in 1981. The salesman sat us down in the speaker room and put in this little silver disc. The speakers were Bose 601s, at the time some of the best speakers around. The next thing we heard was the opening track to Dark Side of the Moon. Wow! I was hooked on Floyd forever.

  7. I’m shocked. Even my father, who turned 65 on Thanksgiving Day, knows who Pink Floyd is.

  10. Hmmm..yeah. My SO who is only a few years older than me did not know who Pink Floyd was till I introduced him via “Dark Side of the Moon”, “The Wall” and the “Division Bell” albums. If there is an excuse, it’s because he’s from the Florida Panhandle and was repeatedly subjected to Elvis tunes throughout his childhood and teen years.

On a funnier note..he just realized today (courtesy of a news piece on the topic) that “Another Brick In the Wall” was a poke in the eye at the education system. For some odd reason, he never listens to the lyrics, just the instrumentals.

  11. The only appropriate answer when somebody asks “What the Hell is that?” and the song is “Money” is:

    “It’s 7/4.”

You just don’t get a lot of 7/4 in modern music. (Strangely enough, a recent example is a Sting song.)
