Almost none who read it recognized it. Of those, almost none subscribed to it's sentiments or principles. Thomas Jefferson once said something to the effect that the Tree of Liberty requires occasional watering with the blood of Patriots. I agree that it requires watering also, as Liberty is never free, but the Tree thrives equally well when it is fertilized with the blood of Traitors and Despots, of whom there are an abundance in the United States of the present. Once again, I remind one and all that in the bi-centennial year, this Declaration was presented as a Petition on the streets of NYC. Almost none who read it recognized it.
