It’s a little surreal clicking on an Amazon link and realizing, “oh yeah, that’s my picture.” Even weirder to realize that I remember what I was doing at the time, namely talking the ear off of a nice Midwestern gentleman who was surprised that there was still snow on the ground, and astonished to hear of the depth that the snow could get to, particularly around Truckee.

That’s the bit in To Truckee’s Trail that really struck me. It’s November, and they’re planning to ascend into the Sierras, and this native California girl just knows that’s really bad timing.

And yeah, sooner or later I’ll get around to posting a review at my new site. But I have to get through senior sections first, and rehearsals, and oh, yeah, stuff. My mother also enjoyed it, but she’s been doing the volunteer proofreading project and so was also distracted by the typos. I explained how the setup fee works, and she forgives you, but if there’s ever a second edition we’ll have to roust up an anal English type for you.*

*I am still sad that I was unable to convince a former coworker of mine to look into copyediting. It was a self-esteem issue— she was looking at minimum-wage level stuff— but she had the sharpest eyes of anyone I’ve ever met, and could spot a misplaced space or a homonym without hardly trying.
